The Skarn is a dark visual culture magazine about fame, beauty, scandal and the images that survive them.
It covers the places where pop culture becomes myth: film, celebrity, old Hollywood, visual obsession, public spectacle, beauty rituals, damaged icons, tabloid memory and the cultural machinery around them.
The Skarn is not a gossip site, although it is interested in gossip as cultural material. It is not a traditional art magazine, although it is deeply concerned with images, surfaces, symbols and visual residue. It sits somewhere between cultural criticism, archive, essay and visual notebook.
The editorial rule is simple: tabloid subject matter, essayistic treatment, visual obsession.
Here, a celebrity image can be read like evidence. A dress can become a cultural object. A film performance can outlive the myth built around it. A scandal can reveal what a culture wants to punish, preserve or consume.
The Skarn publishes essays, rankings, visual culture pieces, film writing, archive notes and mixed media process work. Some pieces begin with a famous face. Some begin with an object, a photograph, a costume, a scene, a headline or a texture. The point is not nostalgia. The point is to look again at what keeps returning.
The Skarn was founded and edited by Mariah Leitisstein, a Danish journalist, editor and visual culture obsessive with a background in digital media, pop culture journalism and editorial production.
This is an independent publication. It is built slowly, deliberately and with a strong preference for beauty that has been scratched, overworked or left with fingerprints on it.
